School Fun Run

The adidas School Fun-Run is here! We are running on the 16th of September (new date)We’ve got our posters up around the school, students have their sponsorship forms and we’re fundraising!

For raising just $10 students will receive a reward and they’ll be helping us to get a new high jump mat.

Students should sign up for a Student Profile Page at They’ll be able to do online fundraising and track their progress…. Plus they can win a Samsung Galaxy just for signing up!

Snow Trip

After weeks of rain and strong winds, the day of our ski trip downed fine and clear. What a perfect day to go to the snow!

When we got to the mountain the views were spectacular.
Because we went by bus we were allowed to drive right to the top and didn't have to walk from the carpark!
Some of the students went skiing, some went tobogganing or played in the snow.
We had so much fun together. It got so warm we had to take our gloves and jackets off!

Week 1 Term 3

The weather has been pretty bad but Room 1 is buzzing! What a great start to the new term.
we are carrying on with our inquiry unit on the Olympics. We have been gathering facts and increasing our knowledge by looking at and comparing the Ancient Olympics with the modern Olympics. Next we will be researching our own questions.
This term we will be taking part in the NZ Readaloud#6. Our book is The Ghosts of Tarawera. We are part of a group of school that will be reflecting on and discussing the book. We will be using Edmodo which will be a first for all of us!

We will be going on our snow trip in less than two weeks. Some of us will be skiing, some will be sledding and just having fun. Should be a fun but cold day.
During maths we have been learning about perimeters and area of a shape. We have had fun creating shapes with the same area but different perimeters.

Cougar Park Biking

What an awesome bunch of kids in Room 1! Today we went biking in Cougar Park in Tokoroa with the help of Kath, the bike lady. We are so fortunate to have someone like Kath who is passionate about getting kids on bikes and can provide us with a class set of bike so we can have days like today!

It was a challenging day for some of the students that had not had the opportunities to ride a bike very often, but my hat goes off to Anaru who just kept on persevering! Great attitude, Anaru, an attitude like that will get you far in life!

Also impressive were those student who fell off and even when they got hurt, got back on and kept going. I am just so proud of you all!

I can't wait to take you all out on another adventure. You do Whakamaru School proud.

Term 2

Autumn is in the air, the fields are covered in leaves, the ground is wet when we go for our run in the morning and there is a definite chill in the air! Welcome to term 2 and the beginning of the cold season.
Last week was a very short week, being sick on Monday and then Tech on Wednesday does make the time go fast!
The students are working hard on their Prezi presentation of our inquiry topic - I am who I am because... They are having a lot of fun putting these together and I can't wait to see the end results. When they have finished them the prezis will be posted on the students' blogs.
We are continuing to work hard on our goals and most students have achieved at least one goal on their basic facts ladder. Well done.
We also have access to Mathletics during May so we are trying to make good use of this site to support out maths learning.
This Wednesday (if it is not raining) we will be going to Cougar Park in Tokoroa. Kath, the bike lady from Taupo will meet us their with her bikes and we will have a good exploration of the park. This should be a lot of fun.
Room 1 is also planning a readathon sleepover. This will be happening next week and students that are wanting to attend must commit to reading for four hours! More details to follow.

Week 6

I am not sure what happened to week 5, I blinked and it was gone! It was a very busy week though.
On Tuesday we went to AC Baths for the Watersafety programme. This is a fantastic programme and a lot of fun for the students. The class was divided into four groups and each group had a half hour session with an instructor. The activities they did were:

  • lifejackets
  • kayaks
  • waterpolo
  • snorkeling

I don't think I have seen my students smile so much and for so long! After lunch they had a free swim. I thought they would get tired of being in the water for so long but no, more fun! I am sure the all slept very well that night!
On Wednesday Mrs I was in class so I could do some testing. She always makes it fun with dance drama and music!
On Thursday we had our school swimming sports. All the kids put so much effort in, really great to see!
And then on Friday I was sick! Not much fun!

This week will be another busy week (what's new).
On Tuesday it is interschool swimming sport in Mangakino.
On Wednesday it will be FVHS tech! Mrs Burch will be taking the year 6's!

We are now using Google Classroom for some of our activities. I can send work to the students and they send it back for marking when done, very easy and makes it simple to check who hasn't doe the work yet!

Week 4

We had a fantastic time with the swim instructors last week despite the miserable weather! Many of the students made great progress. It was good the see the children listen to instructions and then trying very hard to apply what they were learning. Well done!
This week is a busy week (what is new??).
Tuesday is the school picnic. Room 1 students will be walking to where the picnic will be held as this is good practice for our tramp later this term. Parents please come along and join in the fun.
Wednesday will be the first FVHS Tech day for the year 7 and 8 students. Mrs Burch will be teaching the year 6 students for the day.
We have had to postpone our Kaahu walk to a date later this term, more details will follow.
Students remember to answer the QUESTION OF THE WEEK!
